Abbey's Bookshop: what do users think?
David Baxter: Abbey's Bookshop deserves to be regarded as a Sydney institution of special shops, not just bookshops. I have been buying far too many books at Abbey's for my limited bookshelves long before its present location. The first location I knew led me to long term speculation about the origin of the name Abbey's (see final photo), but I subsequently learned it was the family name of the owners.Though the Galaxy (department) bookshop had to relocate from the present site of Red Eye Records to the present building of Abbey's Bookshop, and even though Abbey's has not been immune to the forces at play against physical shops and bookshops in particular (which means a game, puzzle, or whatnot shelf here and there), for non-fiction books in stock Abbey's curated selection is still superb. On more subjects than I can list here, and in divisions of subjects like history (which is first by country or region and era) Abbey's maintains stock of important and interesting titles, and new titles, from both large, small and specialised publishers. If I want to introduce myself to a new non-fiction field, or improve my knowledge in a given field (including biographies), for a book purchase I would go to Abbey's first. What they do not have in stock, and rarely there isn't an appropriate choice in stock, they can reliably find and obtain.I must specially note current world current and political affairs as an Abbey's highlight. From as far apart as film noir and silents in film history through US Civil War history to (up to the date) planetary Astronomy - and so many fields in between - the vast majority of my books have Abbey's labels; and about all that I return to time and again have the same labels. Overwhelmingly I found them in stock on the shelves on a visit there. For instance, on Wednesday night I saw a beautiful sunset in Sydney with incredible cloud patterns. So what book did I see on an Abbey's shelf browsing for nothing in particular on Thursday: the subject of the first photo. The Updated edition - of course!Fiction books also have that special curated maintained stock at Abbey's, though in consideration of sheer quantity of titles and stock there are considerably larger physical shop retailers. However, when all factors are combined, Abbey's is second to none at least for crime and "classics", and the skill, taste and knowledge of the selection of titles maintained in stock tells again. For instance, if you love Wilkie Collins' "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone", go first to Abbey's to find on the shelf the widest range of his other titles like "No Name". Also, a range of authors to be found in no other one shop.Readers of "classics" will also appreciate that many titles have editions from different publishers. There are some obvious benefits of that. Perhaps a less obvious benefit is the choice between the nature of footnotes or endnotes. Reading the title for the first time, the better choice might be brief notes that do not interrupt the flow of the story and contain no spoilers. Returning to a title after some years, the better choice might be much more detailed notes that provide analysis of style, context and history information, and even spoilers when looking at construction of the story. The Galaxy science fiction department, sharing the first floor with the Language Bookshop, is obviously not as it was when occupying what is now Red Eye Records, but still nice to have those specialised departments handy. Not my haunts though.By the way, the staff are knowledgeable book lovers and helpful, and will recommend books not in stock - if that is the best for what you are seeking. They probably have some great brush-with-fame stories from the luminaries I have seen buying books there - even if I didn't vote for them (all). Perhaps I would trade off a little modern age efficiency for old age chattiness, but others may disagree - especially if shopping at weekday lunchtime when the shop can be very busy.I have long put off this review because I am not sure I could do the shop justice. I tried.
Sally Turbitt: Love the vibe at Abbey's and the sci-fi/fantasy section is excellent.
Joel Ward: Great staff and quite the collection. Very impressed.
Mic Millist: This is one of Sydney's best bookshops.Staff couldn't be more friendlier and helpful.Lots of warm fuzzies here.
Noriko Amies: Excellent collection of books not only in English but in other languages, too.
Miro K: Books for everyone well stocked big range of topics
Shawn Andrew: The best bookshop in town.I've been buying books from there for years.
Taylor Trippe: An old school bookstore with a broad selection. Searched three other Sydney bookstores for two specific titles, finally found them here.
Jairo A: Peaceful place to lose yourself in books
Syzygy Dualcast: I was just passing by when I saw this bookshop got stuck inside for 2 hours...found a last copy of a hardback Sherlock Holmes collection...grabbed it then went to the cashier. Done! 5 stars!!!
mecci oncel: Love Abbeys Bookshop - great selection and awesome staff.
Tim Morrison: Found the book I wanted..
Brian Webber: Amazing bookshop for the sci-fi buff, language enthusiast or general bookworm. A Sydney institution that's well worth a browse due to their extensive collection.
Andy Coombs: A great range of ESL and foreign language books.
Ron Pettersson: Love this store for years, so many great books in stock.
hodlum -: Book store with a dedicated sci-fi and fantasy section. Knowledgeable staff and wide selection of books. Also chairs.
Tavishi Matthews: Wonderful and unique bookstore. Definitely worth checking out. Very well organised and I liked the vibe of the place. I spent some time in the humor section, history section, politics section and foreign languages area upstairs. They had a fantastic range of things. I will definitely go back soon to buy some things soon.
JEFF COMINO: Great range of foreign language books.
Cj Gollan: Because I am bedbound visiting is no longer possible but the staff are so very helpful and knowledgeable I always get the greatest service
Barry Slater: Very good array of books
HL Ms: I used to buy books for quite a while at Abbey's bookshop. I made the mistake to ask politely if my students - not me- could get a free postage, the answer was negative -it is all right- but could have been formulated politely. I also asked some information about a book which is in stock but was told to go to the editor website to get the answer to my question. Disappointing.

Dymocks Sydney: what do users think?
Madeleine Kulakauskas: Books, cards and gifts for everyone!
Rex Toomey: Cafe was great, coffee nice and hot and the almond slice was very tasty Recommended.
Ren Maree: my home away from home
Damian Corkett: Book stores are closing right... Online content is becoming easier to access... So you'd think the greeter at the front door would be more than happy to help a real live person walking in their front door... Well no, not here! Would have thought they would be more accommodating even if just for saving her own job while this store remains open...
Robin Tang: Great bookstore to spend a few hours, sadly items are very expensive
Steve Mc: Great bookstore. It’s huge, has a coffee shop inside and has an excellent selection of stationary items also
Jeanette: Books, seats, the opportunity to have a cuppa or some food. What's not to love?
lachlan sunderland: Overall a great store with great range of books and stationary… But why on earth do you close at 6pm on Thursday night?! Guess I’m off to Kinokuniya instead.
Jess: I had an appt in the building and as I was waiting, I Googled a watch/jewellery repair place in the CBD, and to my amazement, there happened to be one in the building a few floors below!Shout out to The Jeweller & Watchmaker Service CentreThank you for your quick and friendly service! The price was great and results amazing for the removal of a link in my bracelet!I'll def be back to this shop next time I need any repairs for my (or a friend) watch or jewellery!
Daniel Hamilton: Awesome book shop. Large range all books I was looking for
Micheala Becker: Soooo many books, and some of the best coffee I’ve ever had at the cafe. What a great little retreat in the CBD, and so much material for endless inspiration.
Lance Butler: Good variety of books
Benjamin Lim: Charming bookstore, great deals and a cafe with killer Eastern European cuisine
Joel Ward: Great staff but can be quite busy on the weekends. Drop by during the week for the cafe and good company if you can.
RRVic: Located along George Street, Sydney, I think this is the only bookstore on my way home from the office going to my apartment in Haymarket. My day would not be complete without passing by Dymocks, checking out their new book releases, new toys, new trinkets. They’ve got books for kids, pre-teens, teens, parents. Sign up to their online subscriptions and receive announcement for meet and greets with authors, and book signings at the store.
James Tyrrell: Such a wonderful book store, great selection of books, games and stuff for the kids. Also has a wonderful cafe the level above ground.
Geraldine Dower: They are serious about coffee... very good.
Domenica Li: A trip to Dymocks is not only about books, it brings back memories when I saw children running around and reaching out for books.
Madhavi Bottu: One of the biggest store to visit.
nuhc: 2층 무료 와이파이
Anerys McM: I love coming here, I can always find a good book to read 📚 whether is a text book for our students at Ezylearn Languages Academy or a novel to read whilst travelling

Better Read Than Dead: what do users think?
Siobhan Lyndon: Great book shop! Broad range of children's books and biographies.
James Nilphat: Cheap books and such a nice place.
Mairead McElvanna: Great local bookstore, stocking a wide selection of books for all ages
Liyana Rosli: I was looking for a gift for a child, and and the staff recommendations / reviews on the shelfs really helped with the decision. It was great experience from start to purchase.
Jordy McRae: Beautiful bookstore, prices are as expected
Liliana Mawer: Very good book store and helpful staff
반짝 반짝크리스탈: ㅈ 32
Sanjay Patni: Brilliant store and thanks for your help Tahlia!
Vincent: Very friendly and helpful staff. The monthly Bad Women and Better Reader book clubs hosted here are engaging, fun and feature “interesting” (in all senses of the word) books. Book selection is what you’d expect, mostly newer items with some classics. Would recommend to any book lover.Only nitpick is that the various monthly book clubs advertised don’t actually say what the month’s book is, just a picture graphic that doesn’t display the full cover, which makes ascertaining what the book is a bit challenging at times.
Niki Vasiliadis: Awesome bookstore, the staff know their books. Excellent range of books categorised by genre and interest. It’s located next to Dendy, parking is available via street or behind IGA.
Vicky Wong: A wonderful shop owner who collects all types of books, and they are all in good qualities, the bookshop has two floors, ground floor and floor 1 , I didn’t take a chance to look up on floor two but the book I believe is definitely good! And my handmade greeting cards is also in the shop as well so definitely give a five star review!
David K: Good selections, informed service.
Grant Brown: Great store, great range and great staff
Gianna Brassil: excellent selection of cultural studies & feminist studies, and super friendly and helpful staff - go to this bookstore!!
hai le: Courteous, knowledgeable staff who are passionate about books and reading.
Geoffrey Johnstone: This is paradise for book lovers. Staff were extremely helpful and professional. We found the book we were looking for and it was reasonably priced.
Rebecca Gee: Excellent selection and ambiance. Please please please May we have an area for adults to read??????😊😊😊😊😊
Dave Stuart: Lovely staff, and great selection. The handwritten staff notes on their favs are always a big help.Im a big supporter of buying local, but your "No refunds" policy is a massive turn off. I brought a book as a present for someone but found out the next day i didnt need it. So took back in less than 24 hours later and could only get exchange or store credit. I can understand why you'd prefer not to refund, but its not great customer service.
Phillip Tang: A very well curated selection of books including graphic novels and cook books. There are staff reviews on the shelves and then shop window does a good job of grouping books by theme such as feminism, LGBTQ, and ethically diverse authors and themes. It feels like a cultural hub of Newtown. There could be more travel books.
Allison Lee: Great local bookshop with huge range. They have reviews of books all over the shop. Excellent kids section. Support the locals!
Forever Tupou: A few smirks at my enquiry and email address from the girls on the front desk.

Gertrude & Alice Cafe Bookstore: what do users think?
Alexis Cortez: Is one of the only spots in Bondi to sit down and chill, just a bit annoying that if it’s busy you’ll get probably adviced to leave if you’re not consuming more food / drinks.
Riley Ellem: Great place to have a coffee and read a book
Camille Leclère: Gertrude & Alice has always been my favourite coffee place in bondi! Even now that I’ve moved to a different suburbs, I always come back. For their chai tea obviously, and love for books. The staff is very kind and the vibe is great. Can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for a bite (menu is great!), coffee, nice place to chat, with sittings inside or outside!
Annette Davey: First visit there and was made to feel very unwelcome - went to pay for a Birthday card and instead of a hello, (I started with a Hi, how are you) I was greeted with a 'Pay at the other counter'. Not a great first impression, but because I'm in the area working I'll give it one more try. Hopefully the person was just having one of those days because the coffe was great and it's a gorgeous little cafe, such a pity the service wasn't.
Gilbert Bages: Lovely beautiful unique cafe with good selection of second hand books to buy
David Fleming: Great coffee
Karen Mearns: Friendly and obliging service. Very prompt delivery after ordering online from Brisbane. Ordered Tuesday arrived Thursday!
W Family: Ordered over the interwebs, received prompt communication, prompt shipping across country to Perth and a lovely handwritten note on my selection. Great shopping experience.
LNB Gaming: I was greeted with a rude "Go wait outside" while waiting for my coffee because some girl is "cleaning" or whatever she is trying to do. Really? How about teaching some of the personnel how to talk and deal with clients? Just plain rude - maybe try being polite instead and use the word please.Well deserved 1 star for customer service👍
Wing Ching Leung: Good vibe and many variety of books are available. They make good coffee. Lovely place to relax. Just a bit too chilly when I set at the table inside
Ahmet Yaprak: Kein Again Sache
CHRISTIAN UNITED: Beautiful day
Daniel Fish: A real touch of Bondi. Support this local business and their aweosne book store/coffee shop!
J GC: Ok coffee with rude staff= bad experience.Won’t come back
David Hardiman: Worst customer service I’ve ever had, served me coffee in a disposable cup then lectured our group loudly for ordering those coffees and asked us to leave? The server never offered to pour the coffee into a normal cup so we could sit and eat our food, she just went from 0 to full on tantrum real quick. Bunch of weird, rude people running this place.
dario bagni: Ottimo café book store
David Whiteley: Great coffee. One of the best in Bondi.
Karen Baskett: Caters to two of my favourite pastimes; eating and reading!
Jane Anderson: Great muffins and coffee, lovely well stocked bookshop.
Andres Gomez: Amazing coffee place!! I could stay here for hours enjoying good coffee and amazing vibes! The staff is super friendly!
Michael Lever: I've reviewed this venue before, so rather than provide another rating, I will offer a short guide on how to best enjoy time at this unique but often very busy establishment. The first point is to be reasonable in balancing your orders against the amount of time you intend staying. This isn't corporate Starbucks where nobody cares if you spend 5 hours on your laptop for one cup of coffee. This is a small family owned business and while it's reasonable to expect hospitality - charity is something altogether different. There is nothing more uncomfortable for staff or clients than issuing a request to leave. So at the least, if settling in for a long read, keep your orders ticking over.Secondly - don't downplay the bookstore element. If you are after a particular book or genre, don't be afraid to ask for help and you will probably be pleasantly surprised at the expertise of staff.Lastly - Covid has greatly impacted the tourist clientele of G&A. This will almost certainly shortly change and the cafe will return to crowded trade. So get in now while there is a bit more space 😃

Andrew Peterson: Amazing bookstore! I could spend an eternity there. Great books and the prices are awesome.
Maria Fernanda Llewellyn-Jones: My favourite bookshop, amazing variety of books and friendly staffs.

Graham Klerks: Found a few books I was looking for. Be careful with some of their prices.
David Archer: I enjoyed the vibe
Darien Baillie: Lovely shop with a wide selection for all ages. Very enjoyable to browse.
Justin Mikov: This is a place that sells you used books for too much money. They don’t accept reasonable offers because they’re doing well selling low value stock at at inflated prices. You’ll find better books and more reasonable prices at Goulds.
hyera lee: The blind dating book is the best idea ever!
Abigail: One of my favourite parts of Newtown, I never visit the suburb without stopping by!
Chris Oneel: Very friendly
Yao-Tai Li: Great selections and reasonable price.
알렉스: I love this place! Everyone is always so helpful and friendly. I always checked out staff recommendations for new books because they always pick really good ones. The "blind date with a book" setup is also a great idea that I kept coming back for. You can really find some great reads here.
Bee: Beautiful atmosphere and a great selection of books. Open super late and staff are always helpful
Todd Lupica: Fantabulous!! Always find something that interests me - you will as well - great history section and heaps of music biographies even comics and graphic novels and enough fiction titles to keep you reading for the rest of your life!!I bought 3 books
Mitchell Kane: Great store, I visit it every time I am in the area! Heaps of books on music, pop culture and vintage books to boot
Bobby Shek: One of the best bookshops I’ve been to! Such a lovely small and cozy store with a variety of genres of books to choose from! Completely mesmerised by its “vintage” books, and the owner is just one of the nicest person. No doubt I’ll be coming here again soon!
MJ Roxas: This is a gem for bibliophiles who would like to strike a good deal on books! Lots of good finds and good organisation. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, they have written recommendations or just ask.

The Bookshop Darlinghurst: what do users think?
Michael Bennett: I visit the Darlinghurst Bookshop at least once a month. It’s a charming local bookshop that just happens to have the largest selection of LGBTQI books in Sydney. The staff are friendly and have recommended some great books to me over the years. They also have great book signing events and special deals. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend visiting.
Gleb B: Огромный книжный на 3 этажа.
Sass Cocker: This shop is the best. They send online orders super fast and always have the book I'm looking for. Couldn't recommend more highly.
Katarina: Really friendly little bookshop, full of a great range of queer titles.
Blair Cowen: This is the coolest place on Oxford st if not in Sydney. I was able to get a small but beautiful collection of LGBT books and the man working was just a delight. Such a beautiful shop
Evan Tighe: Really lovely bookstore - I was looking for books on queer history in Sydney and the staff had great knowledge and recommendations. There was such a variety of LGBTQIA+ books and others too.A must visit when in the area.
Kimi Kim: Impressive collection with friendly atmosphere. I would like to go back again
Maximilian Ryck: This bookshop is one of the best parts of living in (or visiting) Sydney. Whether you go there for something in particular or just to browse, the team there are friendly and helpful.I especially treasure the extensive collection of Queer history books and niche titles.I hope this shop is around for many future generations to enjoy!
Nick L: Easily the largest offer of queer books in Sydney, if not Australia. 40 years+ operating this gem of Oxford street. Pleasant service, up for a chat and equally kind to let you browse as long as you need. Can’t recommend this shop enough.
Christian Saborío: I walked in the other day and was pleasantly surprised on how friendly and willing to help the staff was. I had no idea what I was looking for, but by just asking a few questions, he was able to point me in the right direction and find the gift I was looking for.
Natasha Taylor: Good bookstore, come here every time we're in Sydney, huge collection of queer material
Isabel Kenner: Fabulous bookshop! SUPER helpful staff & an amazingly wide range of queer literature for all ages & needs.
Michael R: Support your local bookshop! Friendly staff, extensive range and great prices. Don’t miss upstairs
Philip Asbury: Horrid, rude queen behind the counter
Jeffrey Davie: The Bookshop is a nice size for browsing books, videos & other reading material, that caters mainly for LGBTI. No X material. The staff are very friendly & helpful. Also do mail service if ordering online. They also have special events like meet the author nights.
Matt Akersten: Beloved local shop with excellent range and service. Visit and support LGBTQIA+ small business!
Rocky Talukder: Noel is best!
Garry Rodgers: I have been a customer of The Bookshop since I discovered the Newtown branch at least 35 years ago and all through these years I have found GLBT non-fiction, fiction, pictorial and video publications and resources available nowhere else, at this shop and a bit later at the Darlinghurst shop, which, after the closure of the Newtown shop became a Mecca for me and many other like-minded people. Service has always been helpful, informative and friendly and every visit has been a great pleasure. Prices, in spite of the rarity of the huge range of material they have stocked over the years, have always been very reasonable and they also have always had a range of interesting and unusual discounted publications. The Bookshop Newtown (closed very many years ago) and their main shop, The Bookshop in Darlingurst (still open!!!) have been a source of interesting material on a huge range of subjects and a special focus on GLBT interest and possibly the only source of such material in Australia. We really don't know how lucky we are having such a specialist GLBT resource on our doorstep!! Well worth a visit!!
Maps Jay: My Go-to for cards and gifts. Such an important part of our community 🏳️‍🌈
Rachael Stanic: Great selection of children's books to educate younger family members! The service was also lovely with prompt responses and delivery
William Wilson: Has a great range of books with lgbt themes. It's a dying breed that you don't find around much anymore and deserves a lot more support than it gets

The Best Little Bookshop In Town: what do users think?
Caitlyn: Lives up to the name, 100 percent! Lovely and helpful staff with a wide selection of books. They’re always getting new titles in too
Chris Kottaras: The name says it all... service.. friendly can't praise this place enough... Amazon.. eat your heart out.. don't even come close..
Karen Obrien: Always friendly quick and efficient service
Carolyn Steel: Always find a great read here. Love the 2nd hand section
Sarah Mazurkijevic: Having just moved to the area and being a bookworm, I was so pleased to see I lived pretty close to a local independent bookshop. The staff here were so lovely, the selection is fantastic and I'm really looking forward to joining their bookclub
Julie Clarke: 5 Stars for quality of service, politeness, truly knowing their stock of books and they've already read most of them, so whenever you ask about a book you'll receive an informed reply.I train Birth Doulas and obtain my text books here, plus I teach Hypnobirth to pregnant couples and buy those beautiful books here too.The atmosphere here is a great vibe of positivity and friendliness.I'm a magnet to book stores and have been a customer here for quite a while, and I'm constantly reminded whenever I go into another bookstore just how second rate the others are for service compared to this one.Keep up the great work guys. I'm impressed.
Sandra Baker: Amazing old books and the people are so helpful and friendly. However, I am wheelchair bound and it is not easily accessible which is a real downside.
Olivia Sutton: There are not enough stars here for me to say how amazing this bookstore and staff are!! Was served over the phone today by the absolutely brilliant Alyssa Johnson who went over and above what I thought was a pretty tricky and random request for help today and her positive, mature, understanding and can-do approach to helping customers solve problems quickly and efficiently whilst demonstrating product expertise, maintaining timely communication/updates and making the sale will see her go far in her career and in life.
j rahman: Beautiful little bookshop, once you walk in will feel the warmth & good vibes!
P. P.: My 6-year old daughter loves to spend time in bookshops. As a rule, since I understand a bookshop is not a library, I buy a book if we spend more than 5-10 minutes browsing books. However, as soon as I walked into this shop, the lady started to follow us and told us not to touch the books. I’m all about little independent libraries but since that day, I’ve never stepped into this shop again.
Aaron Smith: Cosy and fun environment. They have great staff and kind service too. Lots of second hand books at the back too.
zoe ligan: does this place have manga??
Jennifer Ossington: Very helpful and friendly staff. Extensive range of new and pre loved books.
joshua walker: An independently owned bookstore with a diverse range of books and a friendly owner
Jarred Tyers: Such great customer service. They helped me track down a book for my partners birthday and have gone above and beyond. Thank you so much!
Penguin Company: This little bookshop is one of my reasons to enjoy visiting Cronulla. After you hear the staff’s exciting explanation about books and crystals, you will meet with your new best book partner or best crystal at that time.
Rachael Priddel: A local gem, with staff that routinely go out of their way to get that obcure new release I'm looking for. Whole heartedly reccomended.
Michael Sutton: I rarely enter bookshops but this shop is so interesting, a great diverse selection of books, staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.
Jack Agius: always helpful, fantastic staff and great selection, have asked them to order in and it's always done promptly. My go to bookshop
cameron jones: Lively little shop. Staff happy to give reccomends and to order in books they don't have in stock. Shop local!
annabelle pocock: Great selection and reasonably priced!

Oscar and Friends: what do users think?
Chris: The best and only bookshop around. Helpful staff and great selection of books.
Lizzie Roche: Warm and cosy. Friendly staff. Great little nook to discover a new read :)
P V: Nice cozy bookstore. The person rynning the bookstore was friendly and helpful. It was a bit tiny but I think 1 or 2 chairs to sit and read would be great.
Kelly Baffert: Not open till 7
Craig Sharkie: A little bookstore with a huge heart
Garrett N.: Cute little bookstore with helpful staff
Paulii: Small, independent bookstore with an eclectic and thoughtful variety of fiction and nonfiction books. Customer service is top notch, very warm and welcoming staff. Could spend hours browsing this wonderful collection. Already itching to return. A bibliophile’s paradise!
Spike Johnston: I have been visiting this book shop over the last year or so, always making sure to pop in whenever I’m in Sydney. Rest assured you’ll never leave empty handed. Will has always seen to it that I leave with a book in my hand, and a smile on my face. In a busy part of the city, Oscar and Friends offers tranquility. A reflection of a knowledgeable owner glowing with a calm and accomodating presence. Can’t recommend enough.Looking forward to my next visit !

Drew Wade: Fantastic service/Great selection of unique cards. Went in on a long shot they'd have a card suitable for my Mum.
