Old School Carpentry: what do users think?
David Troup: Sash window repairs - Darren from Old School Carpentry is a master craftsman in all respects. His workmanship and his customer service are both outstanding. I can not recommend Darren more highly and will be happily having Darren back to work further on the remaining windows in the house which require a full replacement. Darren expertly returned our double hung sash windows to beautiful working order and installed his draught seal to each. Nothing was straightforward in our heritage house but nothing phased Darren. His prices are also excellent value. The outcome is one very happy customer and home with beautifully restored windows, a lovely breeze (previously none opened nor could open with missing parts) and no breeze at all when the windows are closed. I read his reviews before contacting Darren and am happily adding to his glowing reviews.Service:Custom carpentry services
Vivian Fong: Sash window repair - Darren came to look and quote for some window repairs. Turns out it was a much bigger job than I initially thought once her looked. We needed 4 new sashes along with some other work! It took time but they came out beautifully.Daren is friendly, responsive to messages and competitively priced. I fully recommend him and would not hesitate to use him again.Services:Custom carpentry services,Repairs maintenance
Blake Hancock: Darren is a knowledgeable and friendly service provider who will go above and beyond. Highly recommended
Troy Murphy: Positive:Professionalism,Punctuality,Quality,Responsiveness,Value10/10 100% with out a doubt would highly recommend Old School Carpentry! The attention to detail, the thoughtfulness of extras added to the job that I had no idea that I would need, but DID need is top notch! Best experience I’ve had in a very very long time
Louise Badaoui: Positive:ProfessionalismDarren was very professional and did a great job with my mum’s sash windows. Definitely would recommend- thanks Darren!
Kim De Deckker: Positive:Professionalism,Punctuality,Quality,Responsiveness,ValueDarren did a great job on my broken sash window. Communicated well, turned up on time and fixed the window while I went to work. It even opens from both top and bottom now, which it never did before. Very pleased with the job and comparative price.
Ken McCormack: Positive:Professionalism,Punctuality,QualitySash window repair, quick and the windows work as they're supposed to now (had been under-weighted for 50 years!!)
Rodney: Anyone looking for a carpenter who can repair rotten timber sash windows then look no further, Darren at Old School Carpentry is your man! Darren repaired a badly rotten timber sash window on my 1920s California Bungalow style house rebuilding the window sashes in his workshop from scratch and fitting them perfectly to the existing window as well as replacing all the rotten timber in the external frame. I could not be happier with his work. The window now looks and works better than it ever did. I highly recommend Old School Carpentry. Darren’s craftsmanship and professionalism is outstanding.
Lucy: The week before our house was due to go on the market, someone doing other repairs accidentally broke a window - revealing rotten wood in the sash window frame. We needed a new window - measured up, built, painted and installed - in a week. Darren was amazingly responsive - replying to panicked smses straight away to assure us he could help, then he stuck to his timeline and came and measured up the next day. The new frame was installed by the end of that week and it looks amazing. We could not be more grateful! Thanks, Darren - love your work!
julie Braithwaite: Darren v professional and excellent work re-sashed and refurbished 7 x windows. Highly recommend. Thanks Darren.
Vergilio Colpo: Thank you Darren for another excellent job repairing my sash windows and draught proofing them. Excellent job and the draught proofing was money well spent not only eliminating rattling but reducing street noise. Darren has repaired close to 20 sash windows in our heritage listed building over the past few years and his workmanship is excellent without one single complaint or problem.VirgilClover
S F: Darren was prompt, efficient and friendly and I would highly recommend him. He changed all the sashes in our house perfectly.
The Shadow Clinic Sydney: If you want anything done with your windows Darren is the man to see. Refurbished our old difficulty placed windows with speed and precision. Best around, thanks Darren!
Brett piskulich: A few Weeks ago I called Darren after seeing his web page .. He was very professional in his discussions with me and made a time to do the repairs .. He was bang on time early in the morning even though he had to travel across town. His work was methodical and precise and nothing was an issue.. This guy is a old school tradesman - not seen very often in the industry .. I thoroughly recommend his services, pay that little be extra and get the best there is..Thanks for your help DarrenBP
Margot Christie: Darren totally refurbished two of my sash windows this week. They now work like a dream for the first time in twenty years. I will certainly be having him back to do more when needed. I highly recommend him. Please do not hesitate to call him if you want the best!

Sydney Community College: what do users think?
Suzanne Potma: Moved through the framing course at an easy, but steady pace provided by the 2 facilitators for 8 of us. Had a great day! Would do this again.
Pierce Rosman: Just finished the Woodworking course for beginner's. Peter was such a 'gentleman'. Very knowledgeable and patient. The work bench we made has pride of place in my garage! Great course!
Terri Fairbairn: I have just completed the Screenwiting course. It was fantastic and our teacher was both personable and highly professional. My only concern was that the course had been reduced in hours from its previous level and I think it would benefit from returning to that level. This, however, will not stop me form seeking out an advanced course in Screenwriting here, or from doing any of the other fascinating courses that are available there, several of which I hsave already done.
Marie: I think it's always hard to say, but CCE doesn't like NDIS participants who need support attending their classes. I have a companion card, but they do not accept it. I feel sad that people who need support such as myself are not able to attend, and are told instead to pay for two people when the fact of the matter is that the support is not the one benefiting from the experience, I am. It's a gross lack of understanding as to what supports are there to do. I hope your policy changes in the future to become disability friendly.
Laura: Absolutely not impressed with the organisation. I have paid a business English class and ended up in an advanced English class and the organisation didn't pay any attention to my request to change classes or at least get a discount for the next ones. I strongly not recommend.
watchM “spsa” Egrow: I wanted to walk out of covid learning something new and chose a language. After much research I found the Sydney Community College website easy to navigate (with so many opportunities) and signed up in a heartbeat. Enjoyed basic Greek and have signed up for next level. Efharisto!
Andrew Drabarek: I attended the WordPress course on 30 Nov and 7 Dec. The tutor, no doubt, very knowledgeable but the subject is so vast that two days can’t satisfy very different levels of interest (I was entirely fresh, but most of the people had exposure of some sort). So, I guess, there should be an introductory course, just to construct something good for going on-line and more specialised one, eg focusing on e-commerce.
Ruth Leckie: Microsoft Office:Word Level 1This course was brilliant. Denise was clear in her explanation and did more than was stated in the course description. I really feel confident using Word to its full extent.
Jack Leighton: Walking into an actual sausage restaurant, being able to step into the kitchen and work on a grinder and choosing spices was just awesome for me. This experience has made me see that cooking with processed meat is not as hard as it seems and working in a team makes it more fun and easy. Being able to eat a sausage fresh off the stove and knowing I had a hand in making some has taught me even further independence and idealism. The smell and taste of fresh self-made food is just a dream come true for me and I hope to experience it again.
Monica O'Connell: Drawing with Elinor Pickard .... wonderful teacher, learnt so much and I am so excited about drawing now!! Thank you Elinor.
Alison Bourke: The Introduction to Copywriting course I completed last week was incredibly informative, interesting and useful. It was fast-paced but allowed time for class responses and questions. The presenter was knowledgeable and generous in the way he shared information. I now have an increased appreciation of the importance of audience to a copywriter. Highly recommend this course.
Jess W.: Sydney Community College Online Course - Novel Writing with Shannon Curtis. Having always loved to write but also having approached it in a somewhat directionless fashion, this course was super useful in giving me a structure to work within in future. I look forward to knuckling down and trying to write something new, and I do feel the course has given me some really useful tools to produce something much better than it would have been. Shannon was really knowledgeable, and did a lovely job presenting the info and kindly answered lots of questions as we went. Can’t recommend the course enough for those who love to write but need a bit of structure to get them going.
Fran Baxter: I enjoyed the Indonesian language class. As I complete beginner I found it a bit challenging, but Hani the instructor could not have been more supportive. Just need more practice now and then some more learning.
Maggie: I recently completed the Storytelling course with John Knowles. It was excellent and John is a wonderful teacher. I learned more than I thought I would and would recommend this highly to people who want to perfect the art of storytelling in either a professional sense or just for friends / family. Very enjoyable.
Melissa Barhy: I have attended many courses, such as Italian Beginners, Candle Making, Resin Workshop. It's always good fun!
HAMID YAHYAEI: Fantastic community service.
Chuck Lee: The massage course conducted by Jade was informative and she was very skillful in disseminating the information and sharing her skills. Very enjoyable and the participants were very friendly and sharing materials and experiences. Thumbs up
Ulla GERICH-McGregor: I have attended the Greek language course Level 1 with John S for the past 10 weeks. I enjoyed the course a lot, John is a great and motivating teacher. Particularly I enjoyed learning about modern Greece now and also how the modern Greek language has developed over time. The course was online, my first language course online and it was great. Would have loved to continue with level 2 now but the course is only on offer in October. Thanks John, hope our group and a few more are back with you in October.Ulla ( Byron Bay)
Angela M: This was a fantastic way to spend my Sunday. Isabelle has a wealth of experience and knowledge, and is a lovely human. It was a great location with plenty of parking. It was a great introduction to the world of paper, paper folding techniques and bookbinding skills. I highly recommend Isabelle and The Owl and Lion for bookbinding workshops
Paola Vertechi: I have just completed the third piano course at the Sydney Community College. The teacher, Lucia Ko, was really lovely, very clear in her explanations, patient, and in general fun to learn with. The course gave excellent value for money, considering that most piano lessons are very expensive. Highly recommended!
Gil Raymond: Awesome Ableton Live course with Anton! Thank you

Splinter Workshop: what do users think?
Waterboi: Been coming here since the start of 2020 and I love this place. The guys are super knowledgeable and supportive and cater to all levels. I'm a huge dumb dumb and super terrible at woodworking but they help me out a lot and never make me feel bad. One day I'll achieve all my woodworking dreams..
Paul Crowe: I've always wanted to make a fine box. Paul's approach helped me build on my skills to do this. Can't wait to cut it open next week
Jessica T: I’ve been apart of the Saturday morning class for a year now and look forward to it each week! The Saturday team are great (Paul, Tim and Brendan) - they are experienced woodworkers with bucketloads of patience and skill to support people at all levels. The warehouse itself is also quite an amazing environment, filled with all the machinery and hand tools, as well as people running their woodworking businesses.I highly recommend the term courses, this is a hobby that I’m happy I pursued :)
Sinead Henderson: I’m only a novice but thoroughly enjoying learning , all mixed ability and Paul and his team very professional and so encouraging 👍Sinead H
Chris Migocki: Really great workshop, knowledgeable and helpful staff and a creative working environment.
RaZax AZpx: Critical:Professionalism,ResponsivenessDon't trust them, rude time wasters
Hesam Alavi: This is a great place to learn woodworking as Paul focuses on working with hand tools. There are set projects you work on and with each you learn to use different tools and the right technique. If you want to give woodworking a go then I would recommend Splinter Workshop for sure.
john greig: Great place to learn about the basics, Paul has a good approach in place which makes learning about the skills and tools very interesting and engaging.John
Mark Jarvis: Great teachers that take you on the journey to master woodworking with a focus on learning the principles and techniques of hand tools. They explain the way, not just the how. Plus they have biscuits!
Anirudh Hattangadi: What an incredible place to learn woodcraft. As a novice, what I found most appealing about the term classes was that it caters to all skill levels and experience. The recommended/prescribed projects, which progressively increase in difficulty, help you learn the fundamental skills required to be a good woodworker. Paul, Brendan and Tim are all wood wizards, and offer their guidance and knowledge throughout the classes. The expertise combined with access to all the wood, tools and machinery a woodworker could ever ask for, make it an incredible environment to learn the woodworking arts.
Émilie Delalande: Friendly and knowledgeable instructors. Brendan Cody is the best of all!! I have learnt so much there!
Bree McGee: After completing two terms at Splinter Workshop so far I can highly recommend these classes if you're interested in learning the thoughtful craft of woodworking. You'll find the teachers really know their stuff, and their enthusiasm for the love of tools will definitely rub off. I've made some lovely things and I can see my handful of skills learnt so far getting better with each project, as the class plan is really well thought out so the skills and knowledge build naturally.Take you're time, use all of your senses and you'll surprise yourself - promise.
Kieran Maguire: After putting off attending a woodworking course for a number of years, I finally decided to jump in. I couldn't find a whole lot of options out there but Splinters did come up and I liked the fact that they had 2 instructors to 8 students. The price I thought was also quite reasonable for what you get.I've nearly finished the 1st term course now and can happily say I've learnt a great deal already, in particular in areas that I had never even thought about. I was expecting to learn about using certain hand tools properly and while that has happened, I've also learnt about marking out work and using light to help fine tune shapes much better than what I've done in the past. The atmosphere is very relaxed and there's no pressure to keep up with your peers. There are students at all levels of skill and I find it encouraging working along side others who are working on more complex pieces and techniques. The instructors, however, will encourage you to do the best work you can and I've found their advice and guidance really helpful.
Jon Reilly: I have been a student at Splinter Workshop for a few years now and still thoroughly enjoy my weekly classes. I have learnt a lot from Paul, Brendan and David and look forward to continuing to do so. The introductory projects are quite varied and you will take home some fantastic items. You are encouraged and supported to finish projects to a very high standard. I would highly recommend joining the classes if you have an interest in developing your woodworking skills.
Ted Orme: great place for learning new, and extending skills, in wood working. They have all the hand tools you would ever need and are excellent guides to assist in your wood working experience.
Cameron Walsh: I've learnt so much here, and enjoyed every minute of it. Okay, not every minute, I've made a few mistakes on some of my work pieces here and there, but nothing irreparable. Paul and Brad are great at figuring out the right amount of help to give.I started classes with a chopping board, then a picture frame, a mallet, a new handle for my coffee machine group head, then jumped to a coffee table. A++++ Would recommend.
Edmund Thong: I completed one term here and look forward to enrolling in another when I get the chance. Fantastic experience; big thanks to Paul, Brendan, Adrian and David, very passionate, skilled and patient teachers! The projects were well designed to teach the fundamentals and the environment was professional and fun. Definitely a highlight of the week for me! Highly recommend!
Imelda Dodds: Into my second year and loving every minute. I love all things wood and wanted to learn how to make things properly. The teachers are brilliant and impart their vast knowledge and skill through a series of achievable and functional projects. The sense of satisfaction you feel upon completing one is great. I would recommend Paul and the team to anyone wanting to learn woodwork.
Geoff Ont: Great teaching.
Pete Davies: Started Splinter Workshop at the beginning of the year and now into my second term. Very relaxed learning environment in a well equipped work shop. Really enjoying the experience. Pete
Pat Fiske: Going to the Splinter Workshop has been a fabulous addition to my life for years now. I love working with wood and the instructors are knowledgeable, patient and pleasant. I've made some beautiful furniture that I am very proud of.
