Sappho Books, Cafe & Bar: what do users think?
Ren Maree: bookshop cat 🐱 wonderful
Fred FLATOW: 2I 2I 23and
Humairaa Tarsoo: I go there for the cheap books on philosophy but you'll be amazed by how much they have for so cheap. Find also records and a cozy café there!
Courtney Boyd: Three stars but the great selection of books. There was a good mix of old and new and plenty of nooks to search through. However...the pricing seemed a bit extreme including a mouldy copy of "In the dream house" going for $20 and used books that were clearly bought in the UK for 8-9 pounds also going for $15-20.It was a nice experience and I'd recommend a look, but don't go in expecting to find any deals.
Goong Ging (Mikki): Perfect coffee and relaxing place 🤟
Ajumi H: Love the vibes in this bar! A very good friend had a gig here and for that I came here for the first but definitely not the last time. Loved the people, the atmosphere and also the location of this beautiful place.
Jeff Deutsch: Great kombucha
Joan Romano Montserrat: Beautiful and calm cafe, amazing vegan menu.
Jessie B-T: One of my favourite places in Sydney! Great range of books, fab menu (and vegan menu!), great drinks and friendly staff. Would recommend for individuals and small groups!
Cara Mia: Cute cafe with great cakes! (And a cute kitty to pet in the book store)
Erika Martinez: Different, a little expensive
Havoc: Great place. Cafe is hidden at the back of the bookstore.
Tara L: Food was really yummy! Great spot to catch up with friends for a few hours and look through some books. Be aware they do have policies on which tables laptops can be used at to keep the space accessible for everyone :)
Grahame Marks: A truly amazing book shop in Glebe. Beautifully presented with a great range of books and a wide range of genres. Out the back is a cafe which makes a great coffee. Highly recommended.
Ari: one of my favourite cafes in sydney. always comfortable and inviting with delicious food and drinks and a cozy atmosphere!
Alisa D Leon: My two mates and I were super excited to go to this cafe/ bar because we always try to find new places to study as uni students. They had quite a good amount of seating arrangements for their small /medium space, and my group of 3 was lucky to snag the last table. Context, this was one of the larger tables and could comfortably fit 4 people but 6 at the max. In the first 10 minutes of sitting down, we were approached by the owner. The only reason I knew they were the owner was that they introduced themselves in a condescending and authoritative tone that they owned this place. They proceeded to imply that we could only stay at this table if we ordered something (which makes perfect sense), to then we pointed at the drink my friend had just ordered and was on the table already. After we answered them, she pointed at my other friend's Starbucks reusable cup and said, "Well, that's not from here; that drink is from outside", in a condescending tone. The cup was empty and was only used in the morning to drink a home beverage while travelling here. After we ALSO explained that to the owner, they took on a very passive-aggressive tone and instituted that if we were going to take up such a big table, we would need to purchase more. Otherwise, they could not pay rent (their words) and walked off without letting us respond back. This owner did not say sorry once after interrupting the situation incorrectly multiple times. This was the first time I had been personally pressured by the owner to purchase more items, HOW RUDE. After each time we "proved their point wrong", I could feel their patience running thin when they should have taken the time to understand our points and not feel the need to create a counterargument with each response we gave. Working in customer service myself, I would never speak this belittling and short with my customers. We had JUST settled down after walking and travelling 1 1/2 hours to this place. It would be nice to sit for a bit and purchase more when we were ready, but even then, we had already purchased something! This experience was really disappointing because the drink was nice, so that's why I am giving it a fair 1 star. However, because of this 2-minute conversation with the owner, I will never ever return. I will not risk feeling upset the rest of the day after travelling for so long, no matter how "nice" this place was. Of course, we would purchase more if we travelled just for a cafe for so long. In other small cafes we have visited, they have had no problem waiting for customers to purchase after 10-20 minutes. The owner should have taken the time to understand our situation, not already given attitude the moment we started talking. If you work in customer service, you can deliver your point without being rude. It felt like the owner looked down on these university students who could not purchase as much as a full-time working adult. We were talked down to not as adults but as if we were high school students. What is most upsetting is my group is not confrontational AT ALL, so we could not defend ourselves against their passive aggressiveness and condescending attitude. So that is why I am here writing this review, so our voices and feelings do not go unheard!
Minh Trinh: owner has a bad attitude
neha bhatt: Owner cares more about money then customersEdit: Owners response is not surprising and simply confirms my review you need to spend a certain amount to be considered a "customer" (there words not mine). If you feel content lying then that's okay, I know my experience here and there's no reason for me to tear down a nice establishment just because? Again we had spent a long time travelling to get there so yes we did not order something straight away, this is not uncommon for customers to do in other places but I guess because we had "laptops, paper bags" we were looked down on as a demographic that appeared to not want to purchase anything. I love small businesses and actively seek out new places to try out and promote to my friends so again there's no reason to complain just because. Again the owner confirmed in her own words that it's apparently fair to come approach a table of people in a condescending manner (the same way she talks in her response to me under this review) if you aren't spending big bucks the moment you walk in then you deserve that treatment. I'd like to clarify that I'm not complaining that we had to buy something because we had every intention to and why else would we go to a nice cafe, if not to try their food and have a scenic place to study. Again this is such a disappointing response but expected from the owner, especially since other reviewers have expressed similar concerns and been shut down. This review is about the dehumanising treatment we faced and being looked down on, which once again the owner continues to do in her response.Such a disappointing experience at this cafe after having it on my bucket list to go to. The overall visual and atmosphere of the store is very nice but because of the owner lack of customer care and service, will not be coming back.It was made evidently clear that the owner cared more about customers who will bring in the most money for her then other customers. It had only been 10 minutes since me and some friends sat down in the cafe when we were approached by the owner in a condescending manner asking if we have purchased anything. We had, to which she felt unsatisfied by what we had purchased and pointed at my reusable cup saying that bringing in other drinks is not okay. I let her know that it was empty and I was just carrying it around from earlier in the day. Again the owner barely acknowledged what we had to say to clap back with another point to let us know in a very passive aggressive tone that essentially if we wanted to stay and "take up a big table" we'd have to buy more. This seems to be a pattern as I saw another review from a student who experienced the same situation where they felt unwelcome and pressured into buying more if they were going to stay for a while. The heart of any business is building a good relationship with their customers, it's unfortunate that you will only have a good experience here if you pay an amount that the owner is okay with. Again we had barely settled down when we were already approached by the owner to say between blurred lines that we need to purchase more. We felt looked down on and left after this interaction, having a smile on your face and speaking in a "kind" tone does not take away from the message you are clearly delivering to your customers.I hope that this will be taken into consideration in future interactions with customers so others won't leave feeling disrespected and talked down to, as no one deserves to feel that way.
Ben Owens: Excellent bookstore, friendly staff and amazing atmosphere
Zack Alloggia: Incredible place! The bookstore is welcoming, the staff are so nice, the cafe is excellent (love the chai), the bar is such a lovely atmosphere, the share plates are divine! They even have a cat!Truly can't recommend enough if you're in the area, looking for a book, cuppa, drink or place to relax.
Patrick Tobin: Nice set of books and good cafe bar which needs more waterproofing for Sydney

Love Vintage Books: what do users think?
Rocco Martinelli: Very disappointed! I went with a few very old and rare books which had belonged to a chatswood family of 1850 and the owner didn't even want to see them. Better this way, I'll give them to someone who really understands.
Lisa Denmeade: Thank you Margaret for your fabulous help- the perfect gift found! Lovely to meet you also Bernadette (and Hugo!). A very welcome interlude to my day. Looking forward to returning.
Sandy Godfrey: If you love rare books this is such a hidden treasure, walk in and take your time.
Alexander Priest: Fantastic range of older books and postcards, great for anyone interested in building or starting a collection. I would highly recomend it
T0mmy: Great atmosphere, welcoming staff and a great selection
Jaymark Palanmor: Worth the visit. Has some great books and lovely staff. Had a great time
Ben Lee: A very tidy bookshop with a sizeable range that leans more to older used titles than the more recent. Still, it's worth a look.
Alyssa Yuan: Nostalgic vintage collections among delicate decorations are definitely worth a perusal.
Tamz Taumalolo: I had been recommended this book store by quite a few locals in the area. Super cute store, run entirely by the lovely Margaret. A breadth of options to choose from, and Margaret is very knowledgeable. If she doesn't stock what you are looking for then don't hesitate to ask her! She was so friendly and helpful. Will definitely be coming back here to find that perfect gift for my loved-ones this festive season!
Kim DUNSTAN: After three previous successful book stores with other dealers over many years, this latest location of Margaret's in Willoughby is as inspiring as it is enjoyable. A restful oasis in my own life, it is so interesting and enjoyable as I'm occasionally able to listen to her advising and directing real and potential customers to the best possible outcome with herself or another book dealer. We recently saw well over twenty bookstores overseas in centres such as London, Glasgow, Wigtown, Inverness, New York and Halifax and this little bookshop of Margaret's is really as good as it gets given some space restraints. Plan a visit, you won't be disappointed. Expression of interest: Yes.....I'm obviously a relative.
Marketing Dentalcorp: Beautifully presented, gorgeous book store. I love old books and this place is full of them. There's a wonderful children section and beautiful books in the arts section. New stock comes in regularly apparently so I'll be back!
