Julian Ashton Art School: what do users think?
John Reynolds: Great place for art lovers
phil went: A most extraordinary place dedicated to helping people from all walks and ages acquire real, technical skill, all at their own pace. Recently accredited by the Art Renewal Centre, this school is up there with international realist ateliers. The teachers are contemporary artists who have come through the school themselves, winning major art prizes and love imparting their extensive knowledge to students, whether an absolute beginner or an advanced student.
Anton Chistiakov: Nice collection of casts and studio .
Christle: Most of the time its self guided
Laura Gardner: I joined Rod Wong's beginners class. He's a great teacher and the whole class has a great atmosphere.
Paulina Kazarinov: This is the best institution in Australia that teaches Traditional Realist Academic Painting and Drawing. The school is providing a supportive, friendly and encouraging environment for all level of students.Being a current student at Julian Ashton Art School for the last 5 years (with intention to continue and broaden my education for at least two additional years) I must stress that for the greatest benefit, a person who is considering starting the art education here, has to be prepared for at least 3 - 4 years of full time studies or equivalent. Self motivation, dedication and practice outside the school are all just as important in achieving excellence and result.
Elizabeth Austin: I love this school! It has the best, most experienced teachers and they all have the ability to help you truly learn to paint and draw - and achieve the kind of skills you initially might think are beyond you. People come from far and wide because of these rare gems.
stacey still: Very disappointing. No encouragement, teacher was not supportive of beginners. Other students felt the same. Waste of money.
Nada DeCat: If you want to paint and learn painting techniques - this is the only place to go in Australia.Sure, you can go to Uni and they will teach you concepts, and you can be a professional painter - but if you are anything like me, you'd be sitting there thinking to yourself why figures in the painting look SO STUPID when you had no formal training.Painting is a DOING thing as well as a THINKING THING. Unfortunate that technique and actually MAKING the painting is not a thing anymore in Australia. But this place is keeping it alive. My suggestion - go in, do intensive study, and get out as fast as you can so you can develop your own afterwards. You dont want to get stuck in techniques either - as contemporary painters, we need concepts, philosophy, and other stuff as well. its a lot of ask for an occupation that will have you eat potatoes, and you'd be out of luck if you arent WHITE or MALE because inevitably, the favour will go there regardless of any path you take in visual art. Suppose it's improved a bit since the 50's but not by much.If you are looking for career, to buy new car, a house, and retirement monies, I suggest getting into accounting - capitalism and having high ideals/morals/goals does not go together.Having said that - if you want to take few classes for fun, this is certainly the place as well. Located in beautiful ROCKS with places for drinks, eats, and Julian Ashton space is super romantic. You will be working on Heritage listed easels, casts, and skeletons.ps. I often write on my phone, so pls excuse my rant

Sydney Art School - Hornsby Studio: what do users think?
Nic Fulton: Sydney Art School is on the northern edge of the metro area and it may make you think it isn't real. But the quality of teachers and facilities is amazing with an inclusive and welcoming feel. Adult and children classes in sculpture, painting and illustration. Wonderful.
Jacqui Robinson: Thankyou to Samantha and Sydney Art school. My daughter has attended the HSC classes during her senior years. She really enjoyed the classes , the theory challenged her and provided a great deal of support to get through her HSC including sound practical tips for her major works achieving a great result of a band 6 in art.
Diamond Wang: As age 48, I’ve never thought I could draw and paint one day . Art is too hard to learn I thought,, but Sydney Art School have changed my point , They gave me a good function while building up my conference. In a year of time my art skill was improved massively. I posted my art works on my social media, all my friends and families were so surprised how good I am with arts now , they all asked me where and when did I learn , and I told them in Sydney Art School, they have got the best professional team , they are the best . As I’ve got the skill , now I can draw and paint whatever I like . I really enjoying the journey being a artist . If I can learn it fast everyone can learn it fast, of course with Sydney Art School ‘s helps . Thank You so much Sydney Art School.DIAMOND WANG
God Emperor of Mankind: Thanks for teaching me the how to paint not just on Warhammer models but on canvas. Thanks, Joe and Ms Varry
Mayke Waddell: I enjoyed attending the beginners’ watercolour painting class. Krista is a very talented watercolour artist & teacher who is happy to share her tips and tricks in doing variety of paintings. I learned to mix colours, using various strokes and applying shadows, we get to paint nature, landscape scene and still life composition. Highly recommend.
martyn 055: Not so impressive for beginners. They don’t teach kids the basics of painting such as brush selection, strokes and positioning. Not worth it. Do your research before investing your money.
Olivia Farag: Positive:Communication,Quality,ValueSydney Art School makes drawing accessible for all levels of skills and abilities. The life drawing classes in particular are engaging and inspiring with a focus on achieving form and fluidity rather than a rigid approach to drawing. Students are friendly and space is well laid out and well equipped with easels.
Vidhya Khotele: Its an excellent coaching center with innovative ideas!!
Jessica Ashpole: My time at Sydney art school has been amazing. The tutors are so insightful and I have learnt so much!
Eric Guo: Definitely the best art school in Sydney, my daughter’s drawing skill improved dramatically after 3 terms here.

Art Class Sydney: what do users think?
Catherine Masson: This is my second workshop with Ochre and I keep learning. Ochre covered the fundamentals on how to paint water, then it was time to paint our own "master piece". I hardly recommend Ochre's workshops.
Maya de Veaux: I have attended many one day workshops. It is a great workshops with different topic each month . I have learnt so many things from a wonderful teacher Ochre in the nice spacious venue. Highly recommend this one day workshops.Maya
Sabrine Elk: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI've been doing the painting and drawing classes for a year now and love them! My drawing and painting skills have massively improved since starting. Ochre is a wonderful tutor and really helps you push past what you think you're capable of. Highly recommend her classes.
Claire Peng: I have been following Ochre for a year now. She is a great teacher and I have learnt a lot from her! She cares a lot about her students too! I am really grateful for all of that !
Tara Murphy: Really enjoyed my time in the Thursday night class! Ochre is a lovely teacher. The vibe is communal, relaxed and encouraging. Perfect for beginners or people with experience.
Kristin Parsons: Ochre is a dedicated teacher who taught me how to mix a palette and to really look.
Bonny Parkinson: I've been attending Ochre's art classes for a few years now. Over this time I've learnt so much about colour and composition. She's challenged me and encouraged me, and she always has something positive to say about everyone's work. My painting has significantly improved, and I enjoy it more too, thanks to Ochre.
Lynnette Dorn: In Ochre's art class I've learnt to observe, to appreciate perspective and composition and to experiment with texture and colour. I've gone from nervous novice to confident drawer. The classes are informative, fun, creative and challenging. It's why I keep coming back term after term.
Matt AndClaire88: Very fun to do with a company. Me and my wife enjoyed it thoroughly.
Kaisa May: Gabrielle is the best teacher, motivator, & inspiration! I never knew I could gain so much knowledge, understanding and passion for art as I have from Gabrielle. Three years of classes and still going strong. Gabrielle is the voice in my head now when I am painting.
Francesca Trocheif: I had never painted until I started at Art Class Sydney. I've just enrolled in my 2nd term. I'm loving the sharing of ideas, learning of techniques, genuine support & encouragement. So much fun and such surprising results for a novice artist. Thanks Gabrielle & Polly
ellen: This year I was looking to further develope my painting skills in both oils and acrylic and came across Art Class Sydney, lead by professional painter Gabrielle Jones. I signed up for 6 sessions course which is incredibly great value. Gabrielle has not just been very informative by covering the crusial elements of painting but made the experience fun and engaging. I look forward to the classes and experimenting with new techniques. All in all highly recommended and will take your painting to a whole new level something no Youtube tutorial can offer.
Richard Walker: I have been attending Art Class Sydney for three years now. I have learnt so much from Gabrielle. She is very knowledgable and generous. I love going to the classes, everyone is very encouraging and inclusive. My painting has improved. I have learnt about colour mixing, artists' styles and art practice. Highly recommended.
Pamela Sandberg: I have been attending Art Class Sydney for a number of years now and find the classes very informative, stimulating and fun. The classes have a relaxed atmosphere with students having varying interests and levels of experience. Gabrielle is very generous with her knowledge and will step you through painting techniques and theory using creative exercises. Her knowledge of the art scene, keen eye and positive energy encourages you to experiment, develop your skills and gain confidence, whether your focus is abstract or realism, acrylic or oil painting. Thanks Gabrielle!
j thorpe: Gabrielle's classes are wonderful - she is not only very knowledgeable and generous with her knowledge, but somehow she manages to know and then encourage each of our individual styles. We don't all end up painting the same picture - far from it. The classes are fun and they've brought me back to trusting my vision.
Suzanne Fredericks: Gabrielle Jones has provided a safe place to learn and experiment. I have found her classes invaluable as a late starter in oil painting. Her guidance is intuitive and supportive and the atmosphere is one of camaraderie.
Janice Ralph: I have been going to classes at Art Class Sydney for nearly two years and love it! My skills, knowledge and art appreciation has improved dramatically over this period. Gabrielle varies the classes to ensure that they are challenging for all levels. Also, I have met and made great friends through the class with similar interests. I would highly recommend attending classes if you have an interest in broadening your art skills.
Duncan Peacocke: I have been doing Thursday nights now for a couple of years and always find them informative and fun! The classes can be as structured or unstructured as you like and Gabrielle is always on hand to offer advice and assistance. I like the approach which though informal has lots of interesting exercises to get the creative juices flowing. My artwork has improved heaps since going to the glasses even though I was a virtual novice at the start. There is also the chance to meet and see the work other students produce which is also fun. Thoroughly recommend these classes.
jenny graham: I have found these classes really fun, with plenty of support and encouragement with my art.

Renwick St Production Studio (Clay Sydney): what do users think?
Amanda Alexander: We had a pretty good time and it seemed Clay Sydney were well equipped to carry out a class of our size (about 10). Their reminder and preparation emails were timely and we came to the class excited and ready to do our wheel throwing taster, but instead the class was rushed and impersonal. I realise it was just a taster, but the instructor seemed rushed and stressed, slightly rude even. One on one he was fine, but it seemed he was just barking at people to move this way or that, stop what they were doing, or simply be quiet. Maybe the class was too large? Little effort was made to give us a really good “taster” of clay throwing - we were kind of rushed through the whole process. The class has so much potential to be a really good first clay experience and is an amazing idea. I would probably put more effort into making sure the instructors really cared about letting people enjoy their time. Either way, we had a good time - we made our pieces and we got the general idea. Would maybe try this again with a different instructor.
Ruth Tredinnick: Been to many classes at these great studios, there is always a great buzz, lots of friendly help on hand and lots of choice (wheel throwing, hand building, smaller dedicated classes) if you want to go beyond a one off fun night out, and then you can really take advantage of the great facilities available across 3 different venues and the experience and knowledge of the teachers. A great place to get acquainted with clay.
Carolina Fernandez: I love Clay Sydney! Everybody working there is super nice and helpful. Would recommend this place 100%!!
Emma F: I would not recommend Clay for their date night wheel throwing workshop. Minimal effort was made to make this a memorable occasion, it was just like any other pottery class. A few things would have given sincerity to the name 'date night', including the simple act of being greeted upon entry (we were ignored for quite some time and weren't even sure we were in the right place), a bit of romantic music, maybe a decoration or two? They also offer little communication for picking up your glazed piece.
Veronica Huot: We did the private handbuilding class in Marickville which was a 2 hour class. Most of us had never done pottery before but Rosanna was a great teacher, she was very clear with her instructions and constantly came around to help us out. We had some music playing in the background and she let us stay back a little afterwards to enjoy our food. A great and enjoyable experience, will definitely be back to try the throwing class!
Andrew Nakhla: I had such a great class on the weekend, Jess was a really welcoming teacher really made it a special moment for my girlfriend and I, especially with making it a suprise for her. I can't recommend this place enough!!!
Peta Astudillo (Peta Nicholas): A really fun activity for first timers and a great night out, our instruction engaged with our group individually and made the class a fun and positive experience, would recommend to any group.
Zoe Nicholas: This was actually so much fun, Tashi the instructor had so much energy and was really helpful jumping from person to person to help them out. Highly recommended!
Daniel Ghanem: I had my first class on Friday night which turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected. Our instructor Tashi was very welcoming and is evidently talented at what she does. She is a great teacher and very encouraging (even if our bowls/mugs looked more like ashtrays).
Samantha Shier: Hands down the best studio in Sydney!  Great teachers (loved Jess especially), great space, wonderful experience 😊. Loved every minute of my planter class!
Lihnida Blazeska: Came along for a friends birthday! Was so lovely, the teachers were great and answered all of our burning questions! Will definitely come back :)
Rick Taylor: We had an amazing time at a wine and cheese night this weekend. The staff were friendly, professional and Covid safe.My girlfriend and I struggled a little and received great assistance from the teachers to turn our blobs of clay into cute little cups.
Kylie Mulholland: You were asked to get there early only to be left out the front waiting - the staff had little interest in the class offering next to no assistance or guidance . You are competing against the paint and sip model - they run rings around you for both interaction and fun .Doesn't help that your staff are telling you after an hour you can go if you are finished - you pay for a two hour experience - make it onea 2/10 from me !
Elissa Rao: I agree with the previous 2 reviews... Overpriced and disengaged rather unhelpful borderline rude staff. Covid practices are non existent, tables were too close so it was impossible to social distance. The pottery 'tools' we were provided with were a paddle pop stick and a wooden skewer (which were not cleaned/replaced or serialised between classes). I had better tools in my primary school art class!!!I'm yet to see my glazed piece, i hope my leaf imprints show up, as the instructors assured me that they would through the glaze.
Andrew Pham: Booked a date night class as a first timer for what I hoped would be a nice night out with my partner.Arrived and greeted by a lackadaisical and indifferent person who would be our lead/instructor.The instructional aspect of it was ok for the couple of minutes it ran. But the overall mood and experience was profoundly lacking in what one would reasonably hope for from a date night out doing something creative and fun.Like a previous reviewer mentioned, a big dirty towel was shared amongst the group of strangers to clean our clay-stained hands. We were told to scrub the area clean and then dunk our hands into a tub of muddied water before rinsing off in another room.Cons: standoffish instructor with no semblance of enthusiasm, poor hygiene control, you are forced to scrub (quite literally) your work areaPros: wheel throwing is fun in generalWas my experience worth $160 as a couple for 90mins? Not so, even for a novel activity that is inherently fun. l'll try another spot if I do try wheel throwing again.
XH Lei: It was suppose to be a fun night. However the instructor was very disengaged in teaching. She was not enthusiastic and asked us to do some of the prep work that she was suppose to do. Not interested in checking in and helping out. Only came over when we asked questions. Most of the class she was simply sitting there. At the end of the class we were asked to clean the station over and over again. It was very strange that the place was reluctant to provide fresh water to wash our hands instead we were asked to rinse our hands in muddy water. The class we were paying was to enjoy not to come and clean. Not really enjoyed the session although the idea was great. Certainly not going to recommend to my friends. There are many areas this business can improve on.
Gabby Malpas: It has been over 30 years since I last touched a wheel so I definitely need guidance and assistance to work with clay again. I took the 4 week introduction to wheel throwing. The space is big, the equipment and materials are well maintained and organised.Remi and Hannah taught me a lot of tips I didn't know and I hope to return to make use of their facilities..I highly rate Clay Sydney
Amy Eastham: I bought a friend the wine, cheese and clay night at Clay Sydney just before COVID hit. They gave the option of doing it in our own homes instead during isolation but we decided to wait until the studio reopened. They let us know that, due to hygiene, they were no longer providing the snacks and it was BYO. Which was fine but no offer of any partial refund or anything. I understand businesses have been having a hard time financially but so has everyone so I think, in these times, it’s only right to share out the cost savings, where possible.Anyway, we were happy to bring our own snacks but, when we arrived, the room was rammed and it was shoulder-to-shoulder at the tables with barely enough space to play with the clay let alone put out any snacks. And what happened to social distancing?!The tuition itself was fine although the website was misleading in the images showing pottery wheels and a fair amount of space - it was without the wheels and, with the tables being so crammed, not very enjoyable. At the end of the class, they told us we couldn’t wash our hands directly in the bathrooms without getting rid of the clay residue first so we were directed to wash our hands in one big bucket of water...all 30-odd people, and use one towel between all of us.Honestly, I was really shocked at how poorly they managed the physical distancing and hygiene so close to restrictions being eased. It seems like providing snacks wouldn’t have been the worst they could have done! They told us the products would be ready in three weeks and we’d have to come back to the studio on certain days to collect them. Not the most convenient but we did it. Once we collected the pieces, we were disappointed to see how shoddily they’d been dipped in the glaze so all the details they’d told us to add to our pieces had been lost beneath thick layers of glaze.I wouldn’t go back or even recommend Clay to anyone else; it had the vibe of some hipsters charging too much money to fund their latest fad rather than genuinely passionate artists wanting to share their knowledge. Such a shame as it has the potential.
Jacob Prager: I nailed a crackle glaze with no wukkas. Love this company!
Ken Donohoe: Went for a date night class. Had a great time learning and creating. Can't wait to see to the final product. Highly recommend
Justine Greenaway: We had such a great time at the wheel taster class, the studio is beautiful and the class had a relaxed and friendly vibe. Classes are small (max 8) so you get a lot of personal attention which was really helpful as a beginner. By the end of the class everyone had at least a couple of cute little vessels. Seriously great way to spend an afternoon.
